How can you benefit from professional photography for your website?

Branded content created just for your business sets you apart from your competition. Oftentimes, your website is the first impression for your potential customers. Your website should grab attention with unique photos and videos that are specific to your brand. Many small businesses utilize stock photography throughout their website to convey their services or products. While this is always an option for getting your website up and running, creating professional photography for your website elevates your brand and provides more authenticity and credibility to your small business.

We recently started a project in the CMT Studio to create new custom photos for our website. We were inspired by an incredible photographer, Jim Golden (https://jimgoldenstudio.com/)  that creates interesting collections of lay flat style photos.  In this article, we will share our process of creating lay flat photos for our website and why we believe professional photography is essential for your business.

Lay Flat Photography

What is lay flat photography you may ask? Lay flat photography is a style of photography, often used for product photography, where objects are laid on a flat surface and arranged in an aesthetically pleasing manner, with the camera angled from the top down or a 45 degree angle. Lay flat photography is a versatile method of photography that can be utilized for all types of products and objects to create an eye-catching photo that visually represents your brand. Most recently social media creators and food enthusiasts use this method to document their meal presentations.

Our Lay Flat Photography Project

Like any project, it all started with an idea. Ryan, CEO,Co-Owner and Head of Technology at Collective Mind Technologies came across Jim Golden’s photography on Instagram. He was inspired and thought it would be fun to create our own lay flat photo with our camera collection. We love collecting old technology and have several old Super 8 cameras, old photography cameras and of course our camera gear we use on current projects. We also collaborated with our team member, Jeff Meyer, who has an amazing collection of camera gear as well. Using the lay flat technique in the past for computer gear, this collection was a much larger endeavor.

How We Made it Happen

We first gathered the crew to help with the project: myself, Lindsay, COO, Co-Owner and Head of Creative, Ryan, CEO,Co-Owner and Head of Technology at Collective Mind Technologies and Jeff Meyer, our expert video production team member. Once we had a date for the shoot on the books, we started to set up our studio to prepare for the shoot. Next, we gathered all of our tools. We laid out our white paper roll on the ground and secured it in place with tape. Then we created a DIY overhead camera set up using a ladder, monopod and lots of heavy duty tape. We lit the studio using one very large LED panel and 2 smaller LED panels. We tethered our camera to our iMac and we were able to screen share to our tv.

This set up gave us the ability to see in real time what each shot looked like on a large screen right in front of us. We gathered all the gear – lots and lots of camera gear, hundreds of items. We had a few final photos in mind – one with all the cameras laid out in no particular order, another one with all cameras in order from old to new, and the last photo with a combination of camera gear and computers to represent all of our services at Collective Mind Technologies.

We started with the photo with all of the camera gear in no particular order. We chose to use the RED camera as the center piece of this photo. Using the grid on the computer from Capture One (www.captureone.com), we made our major focus the RED camera to start. Then we began filling in the space with the other larger items, aligning each item as best as possible. We then began filling in empty spaces with smaller items, like memory cards, wireless mics, cables and tools. After swapping out items, adjusting placement and lots of little tweaks we all agreed we were ready for the final photo. This painstaking process was well worth the effort in the end. Capturing the lay flat images, each angle, placement, and contrasting object makes a huge difference to the outcome.

We also decided to create as much content as possible while we had this extensive project set up. We removed each item one by one and took photos after each item was removed so we could create a stop motion animation video. This will be very fun to see the progression with items being added in and removed.

Next, we decided to create a new photo, laying out the cameras from old to new. Once the paper was cleared from the stop motion animation video, we worked together to determine the oldest cameras and order them on the paper from old to new. It was a very similar process, finding just the right placement for each item. It was a bit like playing a game of tetris, finagling each camera or accessory to fit the perfect spot. Once all the white paper was filled with antique cameras and the latest and greatest gear, we made small adjustments to make sure everything was aligned. This final image was really cool to see, illustrating the evolution of cameras and technology — starting from their origins, changing in size and complexity over time.

We repeated this process to create a third photo with computers and tech items on the left side and cameras and accessories on the right side. With this final photo, we wanted to capture all of our services, IT Support, NetSuite Consulting, Video Production, Photography and Drone Services, all in one photo. We had our logo of the left and right brain in mind. Emulating our logo, we filled the left side with tech gear and the right side with the camera gear. From laptops, headphones, thumb drives, and an original iphone, to a RED camera, Super 8’s, drones, and microphones, we tried to include it all. We chose to create a stop motion video with this set up as well. This time removing objects one by one from each side, allowing a reverse build up of items in the video.

Finally, it was time to select the best images and edit each photo. This requires making small adjustments to the exposure, brightness, contrast and saturation. We also went over each image to retouch any small scuff marks, hairs or other unnecessary marks that needed to be removed. Cleaning up each image is also extremely important and detail oriented, but worth the time.

Then it was time for creating the stop motion videos. In addition to editing the 3 final images, we also edited the images to all match while putting them in consecutive order to create the stop motion videos. These videos will be a fun way to show the progress of each collection, ready for social media posting, and great website updates.

This project was truly one of a kind, and we wanted to highlight all the hard work we put into it. First we printed, framed, and hung the final images in our studio and office. We were very excited about how these pieces turned out. Finally, with a recommendation from our expert photographer Christina, we submitted all three final photos for copyright. The process was fairly simple and quick. Registration, a few forms about each image, uploading the digital files, and payment. This will protect the images from any authorized usage. We are excited to use our new professional photos for our website updates.

Why Use Professional Photography for Your Website Instead of Stock Photos?

No matter what your business does, there is a plethora of stock photos to choose from to represent your products, services or other offerings. But do these photos truly represent your brand? They might showcase what you do, but not your brand’s personality. We believe that it’s important to create unique photos that you won’t find anywhere else.

When you are considering what type of professional photos you want to include on your website, start by thinking about what you do. Some businesses may have more straightforward ideas. For example, if you sell products, it is essential to have professional photos of your products on your website. Capturing your product, in your ideal settings, with your brand in mind, makes all the difference stock photos simply can’t replicate.

If you offer a service, such as business coaching, that is a little more challenging to capture in a single photo and you may need to get a little more creative. You will need to consider what type of clients you want to attract, what visuals represent your services, and where the photos would be used on your website. For example, if you primarily work with small businesses, using very corporate and impersonal stock photos won’t fit your brand and may deter your ideal clients from reaching out.

A good place to start with photo ideas is to recreate existing stock photos to fit your brand. For example, if you need an office style photo for your website, find a stock image that you like, and recreate it using your own office and computer. That way, you will have a unique photo that also has your personality embedded in it. It will feel more personal and on brand than the generic stock photo alternative.

Additionally, using original photos throughout your website will help increase your SEO (search engine optimization). If you create your own custom photos for your website, this will show search engines like Google that you have original, unique content that can improve your SEO ranking.
